SHARKS, RAYS, & SKATES OF THE UK
Did you know that a shark is classified as a fish and not a mammal? Can you name the sharks that reside in British waters? Our educators and scientists have compiled the most important and up to date key facts pertaining to British sharks in an easy to follow lesson called "Let’s Investigate Sharks - UK EDITION" - along with a PowerPoint presentation for each age group (accessible via SlideShare) packed with professional photographs and videos.
The lesson plan is broken down into the following eight sections:
-
What is a shark?
-
Where do we find sharks?
-
Adaptations
-
Shark senses
-
How do we learn about sharks?
-
Why are sharks so important?
-
Threats to sharks
-
Sharks need your help
Each section includes discussion points that align with the corresponding slides. Vocabulary words are highlighted and definitions are also included in the packet.
Did you know that scientists still have no idea where and when basking sharks give birth?
Dr. Isla Hodgson is a conservation scientist, wildlife guide, and scuba diver working out of the west coast of Scotland, where she takes people on encounters with the second-largest species of shark in the world; the basking shark. In this webinar (video below), she tells us about this incredible gentle giant, the second largest shark in the sea, and all the mysteries that still surround it!

Isla is also an education ambassador for the Save Our Seas Foundation, and hosts their web series The Whole Tooth, which aims to answer your questions about sharks, rays, and all kinds of ocean creatures.
