Shark Research Day: Getting Girl Scouts in the Field

Updated: 4 days ago

We partnered with UM and the Field School to provide a FREE day of marine science and shark tagging for 10 Girl Scouts from South Florida.

We were also joined by a crew from CNN, including anchor Boris Sanchez, as part of a shark documentary.

The students set lines, hauled lines and helped conduct scientific workups on 7 sharks (species: blacktip, blacknose and nurse). They did a FIN tastic job!

"I have loved sharks since I was a kid, and being able to spend the day out on the water with other shark scientists, tagging them, was one of the best hands-on experiences I could've ever gotten!"-Sophia

"It was a great, unique, hands-on experience I will never forget. I really liked how they showed us the scienctific side of it too."- Madison

"I really liked this Shark Tagging trip because we did much more than just look at the scientists doing all the cool things. Instead, we were allowed to touch the shark, measure it, tag it, check for parasites, and even take samples!  We learned about shark blood and how it’s divided into plasma, red, and white blood cells.  I was thrilled to participate in science and learn about sharks and how to protect them."  Elizabeth
